My Approach
'The shoe that fits one person pinches another, there is no recipe for living that suits all cases'
Carl Jung
As a psychologist, my therapeutic work is guided using collaborative formulation (rather than diagnosis), which draws on your past and present experiences and psychological theories to make sense of what has led to difficulties developing and how these are being maintained. Using my psychological skills and experience, I will help you to make sense of the difficulties most concerning you, however I will be working with you as the expert of your own experiences in order to achieve this. By increasing understanding of difficulties, people often feel empowered and better able to cope and make conscious choices about how to live their lives.
Individually Tailored Treatment
My approach to therapy will be informed by our joint formulation, the evidence-base (i.e. what research has shown is an effective treatment approach for a particular problem) and by your preference. Research shows that particular therapy or approach that works for everyone. I am able to consider and adapt and to my client's needs and preferences. For this, I may draw from a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches depending on your particular needs and the nature of your difficulties. I have expertise and skills on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (which focuses on understanding the link between our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours) and draw on theories and techniques from other well-recognised therapies including Narrative Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Mindfulness.
Relationship Focus
As a contextual constructionist, I believe that people are embedded in their social and cultural world. People suffer not only from their thoughts and feelings but also from the limits of their relationships. Therefore I place a strong emphasis on interpersonal dynamics and relationships, encouraging you to share these experiences where possible to inform our work together and put things into context.
A Safe Space
I will provide a safe and confidential space in which to meet. I work in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) and the British Psychological Society (BPS) code of ethics. We will discuss all aspects of confidentiality during our initial meeting to ensure this is all clear.
